Everything's all set up properly. Look, ma, no stress!!
OW! Yes!! The network is working, the KVM switch is working, I am ROCKIN’.
I’m at home. I’m drinking my own coffee, blended just the way I like it. I’m wearing comfortable clothes and my outrageous fuzzy socks (my feet get cold, even if it’s 85 degrees out.) I’m listening to my music, on my stereo. My finger- and toe-nails are painted blue (because I can). Ursa just overcame his fear of the new furniture and stairstepped from the small bookcase to my desktop, and crawled around investigating. I still have to straighten out and wrap all the various cables, so that the region under my desk doesn’t look quite so Cthulhuoid; but all the electronics are working quite well.
Saturday I woke up fiendishly early to go spend the morning in San Francisco. I only got lost twice, trying to get to the Presidio to help out with the AIDS Lifecycle training ride. It was a good morning, good energy, a good cause, and they had coffee for the volunteers. (Bless them.) And the artwork is much cooler than last year’s design - there’s a sponsor logo on one sleeve, and the logos for the GLBT centers on the other sleeve; but no corporate sponsor logos all over the freaking place. And this year I got my proper size, whereas last year I only worked registration and opening day - so they’d already run out of XLs and most Ls by that time. Then, on Sunday, a truck filled with over 8,000 gallons of gasoline crashed and its spilled cargo - and the resultant fire - melted a portion of the Macarthur Maze. I’m REALLY glad I didn’t have to try and drive around San Francisco after that happened.
I’ve had three days of the new job. Thus far, my biggest problem has been stretching out my workday. Because both computers are right here, I’m always tempted just to check work email…or start a little bit early…or just read a little bit more. Now that checking work email will just mean toggling the KVM switch (rather than rearranging my desktop), I’ll have to guard against that tendency. I think things may change a bit, once I’m fully up and running. (I still don’t have the necessary access to the servers, so I can’t edit any of the pages.) I’ll still have to watch out for my workday stretching, though. I’ve got no problem with working longer a day here and there if we’ve got a deadline, or some fires to put out. I don’t want to make it a regular occurrence, though.
