Laughing with you...laughing at you...bailing you out of jail...

Yesterday’s xckd made me laugh.

xckd: Cat ProximityYears ago, a friend of mine was at the local airport to meet a friend of his. He started talking to an attractive passenger, who was waiting for her plane. Things went smoothly, he was suave, he appeared to be making a good impression…until a young girl walked by with a miaowing kit in its carrier and my friend instantly said, in baby-talk falsetto, “Kitten!” Which pretty much shot that attempt at Being The Cool Guy right off the fence. But he was not only able to laugh about it, he was able to tell me about it in full Technicolor detail, knowing that I would not only laugh with him, but feel the “Dammit — INSIDE VOICE!!!” embarrassment.

Another time, we went to go see Escape from L.A.. It was a weekend, we were bored, and being minor fans of John Carpenter, we had hopes that this movie would not take itself seriously. Sadly…either it was taking itself seriously, or the sarcasm was o so subtle that we blinked and missed it. We got to the point where the Big Baddies were in their control room, about to activate your Stereotypical Post-Apocalyptic Weapon of Destruction and Plot Furtherance. On screen, the generators activated. The power in the control room surged, then dimmed, then surged back. Then the power went out…in the theatre. Into the utter silence, my friend said, “Wow…it really does work!!” (This was the blackout of August 2, 1996 [PDF link], which took out most of the western North American continent. Power was restored, in some places, within a few hours. Other pockets were out for days.) Somehow, though, I don’t think that karmically made up for Kitten.

Where subtlety fails us, we must simply make do with cream pies.
