Situation Sunday 29 April 2007
- You are standing on the edge of a cliff, you have 2 ropes you are hanging on to. On the other end of one rope is one child, and on the other rope is another. You know you can't pull both of them up, only one. What do you do?
See if one of them is able to hold on to the cliff face, then pull the other one up and have them help me pull up the remaining child. I would also try tying off one of the ropes and pull up one child, then the other. If that weren't possible, I'd let go of whichever is on my left side - utterly arbitrary choice - and pull the other one up. - You are invited to dinner at a co-workers house. You get there and all is going good. The meal comes out and it is something you would never eat- Possum stew, with a side of frog legs. How do you handle it?
I'd take a small bite, wait a bit, and then say that my stomach's giving me some trouble and ask if I could have some bread or crackers. If they ask why, I just say that this doesn't seem to be agreeing with me. If they keep pushing, I'd say that I did try a little bit, but it really isn't sitting well with me. - It is late at night and you are driving a hundred miles to get home. Your cell phone has no service. The road you are on is not one with lots of traffic. You break down 10 miles from home. Do you stay in your car, hoping some one will come by or walk, run the rest of the way home?
If I don't know the area, I stay with the car and wait for daylight. Then I start walking in the direction of a filling station. If I know the area and feel relatively safe walking the roads late at night, I walk for the nearest filling station or phone and get coffee, get the car towed, and then get home. - A friend asks you something that is totally against your principles. You do not want to hurt their feelings. How do you handle it?
I'd simply say "No, that's not something I want to do." Depending on how well I know the person, I might explain to them why I won't do a thing...but in most cases I'll just leave it at "No". This happened to me in high school a few times. Saying "no" worked fine, and only in one case did the person so denied get pissy and try the line "a real friend would do it!!". Later that school year, that person was arrested for petty theft....so I didn't exactly lose anything valuable by saying "no".
