Novell moves, internally, to Linux on their desktops.
So Novell is moving all their internal desktops to open source software.
In a rather astounding case of corporate “do as we do, not just as we say”, Novell will be slowly but surely switching all of its internal machines over to using Linux. Probably a Novell-branded subflavour of Linux, and no precise word on which distro they’ll use; but they’re making the transition.
My own personal belief is, one operating system is no better inherently than another. How a user should make their choice depends on their own personal computer comfort levels. If someone’s an utter tyro, they probably shouldn’t try to download and install a FreeBSD distro without some serious assistance…and then they get to work in the environment, which can be a heavy learning curve. The same thing faces Windoserfs who are suddenly faced with using a Macintosh, or Macvocates who decide to puddle around in the SuSE pond. Any of those crossings can involve hours and hours of relearning, not to mention replacing all of one’s favourite software tools. Yes there are Windoze emulators aplenty — but most home systems don’t always have the power to easily run them, not to mention that they don’t run all WinProgs.
So it’s quite, quite nice to see a large corporation, who has to spend all that money on internal retraining, making the move. Even if it is partially done to be a really good press release.
