Clearance Level: RedRemains of the Day

...and it's not even 11am yet.

Each of my cats has a guardian dragon. Ursa’s guardian dragon must have been napping this morning, though — I stepped on poor Ursa’s tail when I moved away from the workstation without checking to see where the cats had arrayed themselves. (Either the dragon was napping, or it just figured: if cats are going to sit that close to rocking chairs or suddenly-moving human feet, there’s really not much that can be done.) Ursa forgave me fairly rapidly, letting me pick him up and hold him and pet him while he draped himself over my shoulder, purred, and hung his front paws behind me like a washerwoman leaning on a fence. At least he’s not sitting right by my feet now…though that will probably change tomorrow.

Last night I could not get to sleep. I don’t know if it was the heat (it was in the mid-70s even at 10pm) or the lack of cyclobenzaprine, which meant that I was in low-grade slight pain (my prescription ran out yesterday, and the pharmacy has to get authorization for a refill). Maybe it was both. I have no idea. At any rate, I have two afternoon meetings today (one brief and focussed, one large “conference” departmental state-of-the-union type of thing) and I suspect that I’ll drift off during the second one. Thank goodness for the mute button.

I got an RMA for my laptop. I’m sending the beastie back. At 11 pounds, it’s not dreadfully portable…and with that monstrous chunky thingamajig on the bottom (speakers and such), it’s ungainly. No self-respecting laptop thief would WANT to steal this bitch, it’s that fugly. And so, after keeping it for a week and a half and debating, I decided that I’m paying too damn much money for something that is chunky, clunky, and in the end, not what I want. So back it goes. I uninstalled the software I’d put on there, but left the mouse button settings switched around. (Hell, they’ll just hose the entire hard drive once it gets back to the manufacturer. I just didn’t want them having access to any of my software licenses.) I now have my eye on a very nice-looking Sony VAIO: at just under 6 pounds, it’s ultrathin, and less than $50 more than The Ungainly Monstrosity. Hell, I can afford an extra $50 to avoid visits to Herr Doktor Pain the chiropractor.

And speaking of my back…I’m at about 85% normal. I can drive (earlier last week I drove 70 miles and only had a mild ache during the last 15 miles), I can sit, I can sleep on my side, I can walk, I can do almost everything. But I still have some sciatic pain, and I still have to take hydrocodone. I’ve been down to one a day for the last week and a half, so I’m definitely taking less medication. But I still need that (and the cyclobenzaprine) to relax and sleep fully. The muscles just won’t let go, otherwise; and I spend quite a lot of time twisting about, in a semiconscious haze that’s just near enough to the beginnings of sleep to be a tease, but unable to drop into actual, healthful, restful REM sleep. I have another physical therapy appointment tomorrow, and a doctor’s appointment in two weeks - so here’s hoping that I can keep getting better. I’m awfully tired of this pain-thing.

I think I may have to contact the insurance company and ask them to weild the workman’s comp stick in order to get my drafting stool. As soon as they found out that I was merely an individual consumer, the showrooms stopped returning my phone calls and emails. While I understand why they do this (companies buy mass quantities; and if the salespeople are going to sell these expensive items to buyers who end up going elsewhere, they need the massive sales to meet the bottom lines,) it’s a real absolute pisser when you’re an individual who really wants to buy, but needs to evaluate first…and you can’t even get in the door.
