Some times, things just have to end. (I could have told them this would happen.)
The Norwegian government has apparently ended a dual-level contract with everyone’s favourite [sic] software company, Microsoft. Under the terms of the contract, the Redmond company was virtually the only way that the government could buy software. By ending the agreement, Norway gives itself the ability to evaluate and purchase software from companies other than Microsoft — something that’s doubtless a relief to browser company Opera, based in the city of Oslo. The original source articles are in Norwegian, but there’s an English-language summary of the situation on the Register.
I can see the tearful letter now.
Dearest Microsoft:
When we met, we were so giddy. We courted, explored mutually satisfying interactions, and finally exchanged those first wild, untamed long term software supplier contracts. I feel so bad saying this to you, but, I have to break it off.
It’s not you, you see; it’s me. When I met you, I’d heard so much about you that just made you seem too good to be true. You had your own hardware configurations that no one else would match. Your plug and play compatibility and enthusiasm was talked about in such glowing terms…it made me blush, but I just had to find out for myself. I honestly thought that you were the only software vendor that could fulfil my every need and desire. But lately, I’ve found myself…wondering. Thinking. And that doesn’t have a place in an honest, committed relationship.
I don’t want to later come to resent our closeness. I value and treasure the time we spent together. I hope we can stay close. Please, let’s be friends.
with much affection,
the Norwegian government
Poor, poor Bill. Mnehhhh…who am I kidding? Nyah-nee nyah-nee nyah nyah pbpbpbpbffffthththth!
