...and you thought it was difficult switching from Imperial to metric.
The oddest things will hit our funny and send it careening down the path to utter silliness.
Several of us were discussing Amazon’s “pre-order / vote” functionality, and someone asked if they could inflate the numbers by creating several email addresses on their domain and registering them all. My reply started it:
Muse: I don’t know for sure, but I think that Amazon may be able to track what IP sends in which orders. ‘d get a little suspicious if a whole wodge of emails, all from the same domain, also placed orders from the same IP.
evay: Is that a technical term? How many sh*tloads are in a wodge? I’ve never been good at metric conversions.
Muse: Well, allowing for conversions between the two systems, which have never been utterly reliable in the firstplace…a hand and a half. Approximately. (I don’t have my conversion chart handy, either. Going on memory.)
evay: A hand and a half is roughly 2.47 pecks, isn’t it? I think Amazon’s servers get alerted after two pecks of emails from the same IP. Best to find an Internet cafe and start sending in requests from each terminal.
Muse: **That’s** the figure I was looking for. 2.47 pecks in a hand and a half equals 4 pecks in a wodge. I knew there was a nice even conversion number in there somewhere.
At this point, a moderator stepped in and stopped all the measurement conversion hijinks. Guess he’s one of those adherents to the outmoded smidgen-passel-holler system.
