Thursday Thirteen 84::20 - Bright Motley

This is my Thursday Thirteen post. I've started visiting you early birds, but I haven't actually started my list yet. I'm thinking of being especially silly and posting it on Thursday. Mostly, I've started this post just to keep track of whom I've visited. I'll probably post my list tomorrow. Tonight's a new episode of Jericho, and since that's about the only TV I watch regularly, I'm taking time to catch it's first run on broadcast. (And - hey, is it just me, or is Battlestar Galactica really wobbling this season?)

I'm a language person. I love learning new words, learning how they came into being, learning stories of their popularization...and, in some cases, just learning the sound and the feel of the words. (I can't figure out north-south-east-west when driving in town, but I can taste words when I read them. Go figure.) Words for colors are especially interesting. Just about everyone who speaks English knows of Roy G Biv (though why does indigo frequently get shunted to the side?). How many of these have you heard?

  1. cerulean (blue)
  2. heliotrope (reddish purple, dark red)
  3. titian (red)
  4. cinnabar (red-brown)
  5. nacre (mother-of-pearl, or pearl)
  6. argent (silver)
  7. auricomous (pale yellow)
  8. viridian (green)
  9. tawny (yellow-brown)
  10. ebon (black - I like the word, but it gets used...a bit clumsily)
  11. sable (black, dark dark brown)
  12. cinereal (gray)
