DragonCon 2006: the recovery
DragonCon was great. I’m headed back next year, as part of the security team. If you attend science fiction conventions (real ones, not just the ones put on by megagroups like Creation), you should think hard about attending DragonCon at least once.
The weather was actually very nice. The hurricane that threatened the Gulf of Mexico pushed down the air pressure: slightly lower temperatures, much lower-than-average humidity, but still nice, sunny climates for the entire convention. (Actually, I exaggerate. There was one day where it rained — very lightly — for about 45 minutes. However, since I spent most of my time inside, it didn’t matter much.) Very vew of the guests had to cancel, the crowds were large but well-behaved (which is actually normal at science fiction conventions, I’ve found), and while the lines were long (Serenity panels, I’m glaring at you) everyone kept their cool. It was really great.
I had originally planned to attend with a friend. The friend brought their business partner, and they were concentrating on business matters (and their own charity-celebrity thing they’re doing, in which I have absolutely no interest), so I went off on my own for most of the convention. I didn’t feel too badly about ditching them because 1) there were two of them; 2) the business partner made it clear, pretty early on, that they were only going to pimp out the charity/celebrity golf tournament; 3) they’re both adults, they can entertain themselves quite well. Still, it was odd sharing a room with these folks but seeing them for perhaps 20% of the time we spent together (and most of that, time when we were getting ready to leave for our respective days).
I wasn’t able to hook up with the Serenity fan-table folks, which was a tiny bit disappointing; but I did meet several other people whose names I recognized from the Firefly forums. I strolled through the various areas of the convention, just watching things and being amazed at the creativity, the massive amounts of strange, the families (geek parents who brought their costumed progeny)...and the anatomically correct furry. *THAT* one was just horrifying. Then again, it isn’t a proper science fiction convention unless there’s at least one thing that makes you want to rip your eyeballs out.
